During the summertime, we had an opportunity to visit the Little Carribean neighborhood near Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Here, we found this lovely spot called Aunts et Uncles, a plant-based, vegan friendly restaurant. They are also a cafe, bar, and even has a retail space. We heard great thing about their offerings, so we decided to try it out.
The inside was nice and bright with lots of natural light coming in through the large floor-to-ceiling window on the street side. The interior had many live plants and light-colored wood materials, making the space even brighter and lighter. We were welcomed with a warm smile, and a fun Caribbean music playing in the background. Very chill and relaxing vibe, seems to be popular among the locals.
We were there for a brunch, so we started off with Latte ($5/12oz), hot, with Macadamia Milk (additional $1). There is no additional charge for Almond Milk. Since I never had Macadamia milk, I was too curious to pass the opportunity to try it. The coffee was really good, strong and aromatic. The macadamia milk provided natural sweetness and nutty flavor, which was great.
For food, we ordered So Simple Chicken Samich ($19) and Cryin Ryan ($12/half). The “Chicken” sandwich is made with their original recipe Crispy Oyster Mushroom in a Hot Maple Syrup Sauce, topped with Picked Peppers, Vegan Smoked Gauda Cheese, Tomatoes, Baby Romaine, Homemade BBQ Sauce, and Garlic Aioli. I added a side of fries, which on the menu says additional $3.50, but the actual charge was $4. Not sure if I would order a chicken sandwich alone for $19, or with fries for $23 at other restaurants… Felt a bit pricy, but hey, we were all the way out there, as mind as well.
The sandwich and fries sure looked amazing. The fries were cooked the way I like, soft and potato-y. It had maybe Cajun-type seasoning (?) with a kick, giving a flavorful spicy flavor. It was really good! The “chicken” or crispy oyster mushroom also had a little kick, juicy and delicious. The vegan cheese felt apart as I ate, not the best kind for a sandwich in my opinion for that reason. Tangy BBQ sauce was very satisfying, especially with the garlic aioli. Pretzel buns are always a good idea (or I just love it regardless). Messy to eat but so worth it!
Cryin Ryan is made with Roasted Cauliflower topped with a Spicy Peanut Sauce. There is an option of whole or half, and we ordered the half. What a great choice that was, since the half was quite huge! We had a delicious Cauliflower Milanese from Riverpark, so we were hoping this one will be a good one also. The cauliflower here at Aunts et Uncles was cooked well until it was soft enough without becoming mushy. The top and outer edges became almost like a soft ground meat texture. It had a little sweetness mixed with a strong spicy flavor. Peanut sauce added nutty flavor, making it so satisfying. It was delicious!
We loved our food so much, we decided to push our luck with a dessert. We wanted to try their Petit Petit dessert, which is a dessert sized French toast, but they were out of it. So, we went with the other option, Pudding Cake ($14), made with Coconut Cream, Berry Compote, Vanilla Wafer, and Whipped Cream. The actual charge was $15. Not sure the reason why the charge on some things are different from the listed price. It was warm and very moist, sweet without being too sweet. Slightly tart sauce that went great with the pudding cake. Whipped cream was more like white colored sauce, without have much flavor, but it gave additional creamy texture. Not the best dessert, but it was a nice little ending to our brunch.
Their bathroom is located in the back to the right. One really large gender neutral bathroom with a sliding door. The It was cute with pink, clean and well lit.
We had a really nice brunch here at Aunts et Uncle. The staffs were super friendly and welcoming. The food was quite tasty. A nutritious, good-for-your-body plant-based dishes made with such care. Again, the price point might be a bit higher on some items, but I say it was worth every penny. If you are looking for a delicious plant-based dishes with Caribbean twist, head over to Aunts et Uncles!
