BG Restaurant

I have been looking for a good afternoon tea spot in the city, and I found a nice place with a great view. It is located inside the Bergdorf Goodman, on the 7th-floor. They offer salads, sandwiches, and yes, afternoon tea. I have been to Bergdorf Goodman just to see their holiday window display. To be honest, I didn’t know anything about their BG Restaurant or its existence…

Their afternoon tea is only from 3pm to 5pm. And with its popularity, the afternoon tea does get sold out each day. Since I knew about this fact, I requested afternoon tea at the time I made the reservation a couple of weeks before. We got into the fancy elevator with cute picture depicting the year of the dog. The entrance to the BG Restaurant was right across the hallway from the elevators.

The inside was much bigger than I expected. With many windows lining up along the wall facing the Grand Army Plaza, it was nice and bright. They had soft lighting throughout to provide nice atmosphere. It was very pretty with the pop of light green color in the room paired perfectly with the scenery.

Their BG Restaurant is separated into two rooms. The large dining area in the back, and a bar with lounge-style seating up front. They had a few very pretty window seats near the bar.

Since I requested window seats with the view, we got to sit at the cute window seat here. It was almost like sitting on a throne or some sort of princess chair.

And the view, oh my, it is awesome! We could see the Grand Army Plaza with its golden sculpture really well. And, we could see into the Central Park as well. The view would be even more fantastic once the trees become more green in Spring and Summer.

We had Afternoon Tea for Two ($45/person). All the food items are pre-selected, only thing we need to choose is what kind of tea we want to go with the afternoon tea. I went with Nuit À Versailles, green sencha base tea. It contains Bergamot essential oil, kiwi, yellow peach, orange blossom, and violet blossom flavors. It was elegant, natural sweetness from the fruity flavors, I really liked it. I also really love how they have loose tea leaves instead of some tea bags.

My husband asked our waiter for a recommendation on their most popular tea. He brought Jardin Bleu, which was actually what my husband was going to go with anyways, so it was perfect! The tea was well balanced, wonderful aroma, with nice fruity flavor. It was an excellent tea, no wonder it is their most popular tea. Once we finished our pots, we asked for more hot water to be added, and our server did that with no issue.

And then the shiny three tiers, filled with all the goodies! It kind of looked small at first glance, compared to some other ones I’ve had from other places. But, it was actually a good portion, not too much, not too little. Often, we have to take some of them home since we got stuffed and couldn’t finish. In this case, it was just the right portion.

On the bottom tier, they had savory items and tea sandwiches. Some of them looks kind of boring looking, and some others looked extra fancy. Nice balance with the way it looks. Another nice thing about this 3-tier tray is that each tier turns individually, making it easy to get to each items on the tray.

Second tier was scones, with jams and devonshire cream. They only had two scones, but nice big size.

The top tier was filled with petite sweets. They looked really great! I could not wait to get my hands into these ones!

The first item I tried was some kind of cute little round thing with bacon on top. It was crunchy, a bit oily from the bacon but not too much. It was like a quiche, with a nice salty flavor from bacon and cheese. It was quite tasty. The second one I tried was the cucumber sandwich. It was an interesting way it was construction, an open-faced sandwich. It had a good amount of velvety cream cheese, very refreshing and loved the crunch from the cucumber.

The most fancy item was the smoked salmon, another open-faced sandwich. The salmon fresh and not fishy at all. Loved the little topping of fresh caviar! Then I moved on to the sandwiches. Now, I mentioned that these sandwiches “look” boring, but this is where we should never judge a book by its cover. The first one was tuna salad sandwich. I was pleasantly surprised with the first bite, it was so much more flavorful than I thought! The seasoning on the tuna was excellent, it was really tasty!

Same thing could’ve been said about the other two sandwiches. The chicken sandwich had a great flavor of truffle! Yum! The aroma of this sandwich was really nice too, I love the delicious aroma of truffle… The last one was egg salad sandwich. It had some bits and pieces of pickles mixed in it or something? It had such depth to the flavor, delicious!

Then we moved onto the second tier, scones. They were solid, dense and had some weight to it. It had raisins mixed in the dough, providing extra sweetness and flavor. It was fresh, as they indicated them as “freshly baked scones.”

The devonshire cream was good, fresh and not overly sweet. I put the cream on the scone, then topped it with the jam or honey. Since the cream itself was not overly sweet, it went great with the sweetness of jams and honey. I really enjoyed it.

Then it was finally time for the desserts! Look at how many items were receiving… it was a little dessert heaven!

The first one I tried was a blackberry tart. Blackberry was perfectly ripen, sweet and juicy. Its crust was soft with good firmness, perfect consistency. The custard under the blackberry went nicely with the berry, it was awesome!

They had two cookies with their logo on it. It was a bit hard, similar to a cookie that is over-baked. But then again, maybe that is the texture they like, and intentionally try to achieve? It was sweet, well, a bit too sweet for me. It was tasty, but I prefer a softer texture with less sweetness.

Red velvet cake was amazing. It was almost surprisingly good. Sweet, moist yet airy. The cream cheese frosting was a delight. This little baby was awesome!

I actually looked forward to white and pink petit fours. I always enjoyed petit fours, they are not only cute but tasty and fun to eat.

The white cake had pistachio cream filling, coated with white chocolate. It was super moist, with real pistachio flavor. The pink cake had strawberry cream filling, coated with strawberry flavored chocolate. This one also had the real berry flavor, elegant, sweet and tasty.

The last desserts we had was macarons. They were nice and light, fluffy and airy with creamy filling.

I think the yellow one was lemon flavor, and the pink one was almond. They were both sophisticated and a great ending to the fabulous afternoon tea.

With the bill, they brought two chocolates, with crunchy and crispy texture that I loved. Great from the beginning to the end!

The bathroom is located outside the BG Restaurant. Go thought the Gucci store to the end wall, turn right and there they are.

The inside was elegant and large, with a lady’s lounge up front. Nice place to gather your thoughts and touch ups on your make-up, attire, etc.

I like the way all the servers were dressed. White jacket and pants with light green tie that matches their green chairs. The ties were knitted, which I thought was great! Our server, Eric was awesome! He was friendly, attentive, and most of all, funny! We always love it when we have a great server. It makes the experience extra fun. I would love to go back again for another afternoon tea at BG Restaurant, when the greens come back to the trees for even better view!
