During the fall, we went to Brooklyn for some tasty adventure. We haven’t really gone around anywhere since the pandemic hit, so it really felt like an adventure just to go to Brooklyn! LOL. Our focus was a tasty chicken sandwich. I remember when people are going bananas over some chicken sandwiches from fast-food restaurants… Anyways, we were off to Birdies Hot Chicken, where you can get Nashville-style hot chicken sandwiches.
We heard they are pretty popular, and there will be a line of people. So, we tried to get there during the off-peak, and arrived around 3pm. There was no line, maybe because it was off peak, or maybe it was a rainy day, or mix of both? Either way, we were able to go right up to the ordering counter. There were a handful of people waiting outside for their food, and two staff up front were busy assembling their orders. They acknowledged our arrival and told us that they will be with us shortly. They seemed quite efficient.
The had two tables that can seat four people, and counter seats. It is a small eatery, so it can get a bit tight in there. I really liked their murals, and simple yet modern light fixtures. While we were there, people kept coming in, seems like a popular spot.
We both ordered their Bird in a Bun ($11), a Nashville style hot chicken seasoned and brined in a brioche bun with crispy pickles, fresh coleslaw, and Birdies’ special sauce. You get to choose the level of spiciness, that goes from Plain, Mild, Medium, Hot, and the hottest level called the Suicide… We were happy with our lives, and not ready to end it with some crazy hot chicken sandwiches. So, we went with Medium spicy. We got to see the staff seasoning and creating our sandwich while we waited with anticipation…
And here they are! We also added an order of Dirty Fries ($4) to share. The fries are classic hot and crispy, seasoned with their special blend spice mix. I wanted to order their Signature Fries, but that was the same price as the sandwiches, meaning, it must be a significant amount… And I was happy we didn’t, because we were full after having the sandwiches and the side of fries that we shared. We certainly could not have handled the Signature Fries…
The Dirty Fries were really nice. Crispy outside with soft potato-y inside. They supposed to come with some dipping sauce, but our order didn’t, so we had to go back to ask for them. They gave us the dipping sauce right away.
The chicken with medium spicy level was just right for me. I could still taste the earthy, smoky, bright cayenne flavor, without the heat being too overwhelming. The chicken was very moist and juicy, and it was huge! It does fill you up nicely. I liked their special sauce, it had a slight sweetness to it, which played well against the spicy flavor. The skin was very crisp, and the batter was packed with flavor. Yum!
We really enjoyed the sandwich and fries from the Birdies Hot Chicken. They were very tasty and filling. I would love to have more of that crispy, juicy chicken… Once we get back out there again, we shall return for more!
