One of the best culinary destinations we’ve been to was New Orleans. We had such fun and delicious time there… I was introduced the po’ boy. It was pretty darn great! I’ve had different kinds of po’boys from other places, and it always brought back the nice memories from NOLA. At Grand Central Oyster Bar, you can get fried oyster po’ boy sandwich.
I found another spot in New York where you can get some authentic New Orleans style sandwiches, called Cheeky Sandwiches. They had a small outdoor seating area right in front of the shop, with colorful chairs. The entrance had a blue accented window, and a little birdhouse. Cute little storefront, nothing fancy, but very welcoming.
The inside was narrow and small, but cozy and homey. I liked the rustic look with the painted brick walls and simple counter seating. It had pop of blue and red with the bicycles and painted words on the wall.
And what is the writing on the wall? You can read it the photo here. Interesting… And they had one table right at the entrance, with uniquely shaped table and red benches. They had loads of sticker and some writings on the wall next to the table, assuming from customers, which was fun to read.
We were there for breakfast, pretty early, so it was not busy yet. I ordered their Chicken Sandwich ($6.50), made with Fried chicken, buttermilk biscuit, cole slaw, and gravy. I was very happy to see the sandwich when it came out hot out the oven! Look at this beauty!
And it tasted even better than it looked. It had delicious gravy with ample amount of pepper. Fried chicken reminds me of true southern deep fried chicken. And the biscuit…oh my, it was awesome! I don’t know what else to say other than biscuit was amazing. And of course, that made the sandwich amazing. Cole slaw was a nice addition to the sandwich, bringing in the crunchy texture and cool, fresh flavor. Loved everything about it!
My hubby ordered the Sea Sandwich (8.50), which is a Shrimp po’boy dressed or oyster po’boy dressed. The great thing about this one is that you could also do 1/2 and 1/2! Of course, we picked that option and got 1/2 Shrimp po’boy and 1/2 oyster po’boy.
Fried shrimp one was spicy! Had a really nice kick to it, which I enjoyed. The shrimp pieces were plump, and it was a tasty sandwich! The fried oyster was super crispy! I loved that, no soggy part, and really fresh too. This half was really good too! If you like po’ boy and want to be able to have two different kinds with one order, this is a great option.
And everyone knows this famous sweets from New Orleans, although not everyone might know how to correctly pronounce them. You know what I am talking about…yes, Beignet! The another awesome thing about Cheeky Sandwich is that with the order of sandwiches, you get complimentary beignet!!! I know!!!
And the greatest thing about the Cheeky Sandwich is that they understand some people might not be familiar with the pronunciation of this sweet goodness… and therefore, they named this item “Ben-Yay’s.” Now you know exactly how to say it correctly! We got a bag of three mini-beignets in a bag. They were doughy in a good way, and perfectly sweet. They were not greasy, but light and airy. What a great way to end the perfect breakfast!
The staffs were very welcoming from the moment we walked in. Since we were eating inside, we asked for water, and that was just right so that we had nothing competing against the flavor of the food. We had a really nice breakfast! We and our tummy were happy! If you want a little taste of NOLA without getting on the airplane, you can always go over to Cheeky Sandwich!
