I went to a fun and tasty event at one of Dos Toros location in NYC, at 40th and Madison. This location is still relatively new, modern look with clean lines and spacious room. The super high ceiling adds to the spacious feeling, as well as light earth-tone and mirrors, creating more open feel to it.
The seating area is quite small, just a handful tables to the right, and only three more to the left. It is more of a carry out type of place, so most of the floor space is allocated for people to line up to order. One of the co-founder of Dos Toros, Oliver greeted us and gave us some background on Dos Toros.
While we enjoyed Chips & Guacamole, along with their three special sauces, that also greeted us as soon as we arrived, we learned a few things about them. Dos Toros originated in Bay area almost 10 years ago, and now have 17 locations in NYC alone! Wow! They are going to have one awesome anniversary with the way their business is growing… The chips were crisp and fresh, and home-made guacamole was really nice too. Velvety and chunky at the same time, super fresh and tasty!
Then we receive a nice looking nachos, with tortilla chips, carnitas, guacamole, pico de gallo, beans, and sour cream. It was quite tasty, we all enjoyed it. Each ingredients were fresh, it was great!
It was not enough for the amount of people we were sharing it with, so we asked a staff if we can get another one. She came back with something that looked like a nachos that was super-sized by a superhero! She called it “OG Nachos” and told us it is from their “secret menu.” Wow!!! It was piled high with so many ingredients, including carne asada, and shredded cheese. Even though it was monstrous, with super fresh ingredients, it tasted healthy. The meat was tender and juicy, it was a mountain of deliciousness, so amazing!!!
Surprisingly enough, OG Nachos was not the best part of this event. We all went over to their kitchen, where Oliver demonstrated how to make and roll a burrito. He told us how their tortilla is customs made, as well as the cheese slice that goes on the bottom. Every ingredients are carefully sourced, especially the meats. They take sustainability super seriously here. Then he talked us about how to layer those ingredients, and then how to roll it.
Then, it was our turn to make our own burritos, with whatever the ingredients we wanted. First step was to steam the tortilla with the cheese slice, then start putting their fresh ingredients on top of each other. They have three home-made sauces, and I went with the medium heat one. I heard their spicy one is REALLY spicy… I think I did a pretty good job at making the burrito, especially the rolling part, as I kept receiving compliments. At the end, a staff said to me “if you are looking, we are hiring!” LOL.
At the end, if your foiled burrito can stands up vertically on its own, then your burrito is a success! The burrito rolling experience was so much fun, and it tasted even better! Probably because I made it myself… We also received two cards that we can claim one dish off their menu. How generous! I loved the design of the card, they look like metro cards. Marketing genius!
I loved how it was not just sampling of their food, but we actually got to make our own burrito!!! It was so much fun, and the staffs were all very nice and helpful. We all had a blast! Their kitchen was very clean, and all ingredients neatly placed, it made it easier to navigate. They also had many refreshing drinks, such as Dos Toros Hibiscus Lemonade. I can’t wait to go back to try their food in a near future!
