One of the most popular and well-known Major League Baseball team next to New York Yankees (in my opinion) is Boston Red Sox. Their home baseball stadium is Fenway Park, built in 1912. It is the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball, and therefore, many says that it is America’s most beloved ballpark. It has iconic green fences around, also known as the Green Monster (or “Monstah”). I had an opportunity to visit this old and beloved ballpark, for a very special event.
We had great seat, and it is quite different from Yankee Stadium (you can read about it here: http://www.foodlovergirl.com/yankee-stadium/ and http://www.foodlovergirl.com/yankee-stadium-2/ ), especially since Yankee Stadium is still relatively new. Fenway has lots of old charms, warmth and yes, super loyal fans who has been coming here for decades and decades.
So, what was the “special event” that we got to attend? An Alumni game with over 25 former Red Sox players! The last time they had this event was about 25 years ago. This was great! They had Wade Boggs, Jim Rice, Pedro Martinez, and Bill Lee, just to name a few. This was such an awesome event, with every one playing ball just to have fun! The ballpark with filled with laughter and cheer!
They have a few fun photo spots in the inside, like a LEGO art, or you can get your head on top of the catcher statue and become their catcher, even just for a second. They had a few more things like this throughout to entertain their fans and visitors.
The part I really enjoyed was the fact that you can go outside of the ballpark for some shopping and then come right back in to the ballpark without going through the security check point! The parts that are accessible this way is limited, but still is a great idea. You can get a little break from the game or the stadium seats, and walk around some Red Sox shops. They do have all sorts of merchandises, like these hats! We returned to the ballpark after a break between the Alumni game and the real game.
But this is not a blog about sports or shopping…it is about food! So yes, let me talk about the food at Fenway! They do have “basic” ballpark food, such as chicken tenders and fries, hot dogs, and things that are served in souvenir cups/bowls. But, this is Massachusetts, and they do offer something special. They have New England favorites such as lobster rolls, crab rolls and clam chowder! How cool!
We lined up at one concession, and we saw one of our favorite comfort food…tater tots! They were one of the items that were pre-prepared alongside chicken tenders and fries, kept in a heated display. The ordering process was a bit different from Yankee Stadium also, you go up to the counter and order your food, pick up your food, and then line up behind the cashier line and pay for the food you ordered.
So here is the Loaded Tater Tots ($6.50). The portion is not very large, and it is just an ordinary tater tots with bacon crumbles and tiny amount of sour cream with chives on it. But, it was still tasty and comforting. A fun item to have at the ballgame. It can fall apart easily with utensils, so it was best to be eaten with hands.
We did get one of their New England specials, Clam Chowder ($8.75)! It looked like a white creamy soup without anything in it, but it certainly had some ingredients in it, like potatoes, and yes, clams. Not a lot of them, but it had an ok amount.
We added some oyster crackers on top and we were ready to dig in! It was actually a decent cup of clam “chowdah” even though it is not the best in the world… It was a unique experience to be able to have clam chowder in the oldest ballpark in Boston!
But then, baseball game is not complete until you have a hot dog…well, at least for me. Instead of going back to the concession stand, we decided to get one from one of the many staffs walking up and down the stairs with food and drinks in their containers. I applaud these guys especially the ones carrying heavy containers up and down the containers above their head. They must have very strong arms and legs!
We got a Hot Dog ($5.50) with packets of ketchup and mustard. It was a good size, with soft buns and plump dog. Now this is baseball! They also had another staff walking around with Italian dogs with a bit higher price too. I was happy with my hot dog.
It was a fun experience watching the wall-of-famers Alumni game and then the real game that followed. The food was interesting, and the experience always makes them taste better somehow. I was happy to be able to visit the oldest and most beloved ballpark in America!
