Flour Bakery + Cafe

While staying in Boston for business, I found this bakery right by the hotel. It was convenient, and seemed to be popular, so I decided to try them out one late morning. It was a good size for a bakery, good amount of seating, although it was not always easy to get a seat there if you go during the peak hour.

They have a communal table near the entrance, and a couple of small table in the back. They also have counter seat by the window in the back as well. It was not too busy when we visited, since it was between breakfast and lunch hours, so we were able to get a table in the back. Yes!

They had a funny chalk board right at the entrance with “Quote of the Week.” It was shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, and the quote was “Gobble, gobble” – said the Turkey. The philosopher Mr. Turkey is so deep… LOL!

Now, the food. They had all the baked goods out on display, nice and neat. They all looked sooooo good! They do offer more than baked goods, as this is a café. On top of breakfast pastries, they have homemade cookies, pies, cakes, made-to-order salad and sandwiches, soup and grain bowls.

They also have complimentary water next to the communal table, which is always great. I appreciate these places that offers self-service water. They also had all sorts of condiments, including brown sugar and oat milk! Wow!

So, for breakfast, I wanted Earl Grey tea, but they were out of Earl Grey… Nooo! The cashier was so apologetic, and told me which ones they have (I think they had all other types of teas). I ordered English Breakfast Tea ($3/large) instead. It was filled to the rim! Thank you!

For food, I listened to their motto that said “Make Life Sweeter… Eat Dessert First!” and had Doughnut with Cream Filling ($3.50) while I waited for my sandwich. The doughnut was great, the filling was so fluffy more than creamy, it was like a cloud! Dough was light and airy, perfect beginning to start the morning!

For main, we ordered Grilled Cauliflower Melt ($9.50), made with oaxaca cheese, smoked poblano relish, and pumpkin seed butter. This sandwich was amazing! It had a nice kick to it, filled with wonderful flavor. It was grilled to perfection with cheese that stretches for gooey goodness. So much bigger than I thought, more than enough for two people.

We also ordered Baked French Toast ($3.50/slice), made with French focaccia served with real maple syrup. Even though it was one order, it came with two pieces of bread. Maybe it is still one slice, cut in half? Or this is the regular one order? Either way, we were happy! It was a bit unique in my opinion, more dense and rich than regular French toasts out there. Kind of crispy on the edges, but not too much. All the fluffy goodness is condensed into this smaller, flatter form. It was a delight!

I loved their food so much, I went back a few more time for breakfast. I had a small Latte ($3.50), it was nice and strong with great aroma. Not artificially sweetened at all, which was great.

Then Sour Cream Coffee Cake ($3.50). It was sweet and moist, comforting and tasty. It was a quite big, generous slice! Icing was great, sweet smooth goodness. Perfect item to get you going in the morning with a smile!

I also had to order their popular Breakfast Egg Sandwich ($8), made with a choice of bacon or ham, cheddar, arugula, tomato, and dijonaise. I went with ham on my sandwich. The buns were great! Fluffy and had a hint of sweetness to it. But the best feature was definitely the egg. This egg was made into a soufflé, never seen a breakfast sand like this before! The soufflé was so nice, fluffy yet firm enough so that it does not fall apart while eating the sandwich. It had fresh arugula and very ripe tomato which I enjoyed. The dijonaise was really tasty too. Perfect amount of seasoning, loved it!

Another item I had was the Cinnamon Cream Brioche ($3.50). It was soooo good! Little sweet comfort item in the morning. The cream is more creamy, making it a bit loose than firm, drizzling out of the center as I ate it. Sugar coating on the brioche was nice with a little crunchy texture. Sweet but not overly sweet. Nice size, not too big nor too small. Can they do anything wrong? Not in my opinion!

They had two uni-sex bathrooms, roomy, well-lit, and clean. It had bright blue walls and wheelchair accessible. It is for customers only, so you do need a code to open the door.

During my several visit, I had great and delicious time each time. And I had a cool experience at my last visit. While waiting in a line to order (only had one person in front of me but taking his time ordering), another staff stepped up on a stand from behind the baked good section with a device, and started to take my order from there! How cool and yes, efficient! I quickly placed my order with him and paid through the device. Love this extra service that they provide with smile. Everything here was so nice here, I felt welcomed and I could see that my business was appreciated. I would definitely go back for more when I go back to Boston!
