One of the great things about having foodie friends is that they know good places to eat! We heard that the best place to get a lobster roll was from Ford’s in CT. Since we were planning to go though CT during our road trip, we decided to stop by and actually explore CT too.
We drove around a nice, quiet neighborhood, towards the water. We were following the GPS, but we were wondering if we were on the right track…would a restaurant really be located in a middle of residential area? The answer is YES! Away from all the commercial area, not much of anything other than people’s homes, there it was.
They have a decent amount of parking space, but not too many. We were lucky to find a spot when we got there. This looks like a “hidden” gem, yet many foodies know about this spot to the point they are super popular. Even though we didn’t see any line of people waiting, there certainly was a wait… We were told it will be about one hour.
The reason why there was no one waiting in “line” was because they use a pretty cool app. With that, you can see how many more parties are in front of you, and an expected wait time. It was helpful to know what number you are in the wait list. With that, you get to walk around, sit around, whatever you want to kill the time.
We walked around the area a bit, appreciating the beautiful blue of the sky and water. It was picturesque and peaceful. Then, we found some corn hole game near the entrance! So we decided to play a few games. The other people who were also waiting for their table thought it was fun to watch us play, so we had a good amount of audience, LOL.
While we waited, we also peeked inside of this shed near the dining space. It had live lobsters in here! Now we know how “fresh” their lobster roll is going to be…
About 40-45 minutes since we first went to the hostess station, we finally got to the top of the list! We hurried our way over, and a staff took us to a counter seat with a view of the water. The dining area is rather small, and the table seating is very limited. They have a few counter seat that goes around the dining area. We were happy with out seat with a view. We started our lunch with some drinks. We ordered Iced Tea ($3) and Lemonade ($2), not realizing they are bottled/canned drinks… Oh well.
While we were waiting for our food, we saw a very interesting scene. They had a few small boats coming up to the pier near the dining area, and a staff went over with a menu. A while later, a few staffs went back with trays of food. Yes, you can order your food from your boat, and they will deliver the food to your boat! What! That is so cool! Now, they don’t offer the same service to the people with cars… You can order your food to go, if you don’t want to wait for a seat, however, you can NOT eat the food on the premises. They have a strict policy about that. Once you got your to-go order, you need to leave the parking lot, go somewhere else and eat them.
Now, let’s get back to the food. We ordered Lobster Roll and Lobster Bomb from their “Sandwiches-Lobsta!” section. We were all about their lobster sandwiches… They also had Lobster Grilled Cheese and a couple other options as well.
Lobster Roll ($21) comes with 1/4 lb of fresh picked lobster meat, cole slaw, and chips. You can choose between hot or cold, and we went with hot.
Lobster roll was great, nice size bread that was toasted just right, packed with lobster meat. The fluffy bread with sweet, plump, buttery meat… Perfection! It was not overly buttery, but just the right amount to make them extra juicy and succulent.
Now, the Lobster Bomb. This one was much more pricy, the price tag actually surprised us. But, since we were going to be there for the lobster experience, and we might not have another opportunity to visit this spot, we decided to give it a try. Lobster Bomb ($40) comes with 1/2 lb of fresh picked lobster meat. This one also had choice of hot or cold, and an option to add Lobster Bisque ($2 extra). As I mentioned, we were all in for the lobster experience, so we added the lobster bisque.
The bomb was like a bread bowl filled with lobster meat. From what I understand, it has a small amount of lobster bisque on the bottom, and the additional $2 will get you more lobster bisque, poured over the top. I say it was a great choice and we were happy with our choice.
And let me say, the bomb was THE bomb! The bread bowl was amazing, fluffy and airy yet dense enough to hold the weight of the lobster meat and the bisque. The bread itself was super tasty too, it had some sweetness to it that was really delicious. Lobster meat was fresh and plump, and had a generous amount of it packed in there. We enjoyed this very much!
We were feeling so good with the food, we decided to get a dessert. We chose chocolate mousse ($7), which came in a plastic cup, topped with whipped cream. In all honesty, it was not worth the price tag at all… This is when you learn that you need to stick with what they are specialized with, only the popular dishes. Just get the lobsters and quit while you are ahead. Chocolate mousse was way too sweet…it was just chocolate flavored sugar.
They do have bathroom next to the lobster shed, close to the entrance. They have two uni-sex bathrooms, so there could be a line on a super busy day.
They have one big and one small bathroom, and the big one is also their storage closet for cleaning.
Our server, Loretta was super nice and welcoming. All the other staffs were very friendly too. We had a very pleasant lunch here, although we spent more than we expected, but it was worth the experience. If you are in a search for a good lobster roll, check this place out!
