Since we visited this spot, a half year has past… but then again, this is such a great spot to visit during the hot summer months, so it all works out better, maybe? Kooriya Peace is a spot that specializes in Shaved Ice, all year long. Yes, even in the winter! We went there to try some of their original shaved ice in January. They have a menu with pictures right by the door, and you need to decide what to order before you enter. The menu changes frequently, with season and what ingredients are freshly available.
We had a small breakfast earlier in the morning, and this was going to be our desserts between breakfast and lunch. Yes, we know how to live to the fullest…with full tummy. LOL. The inside is not so large, but understandable as they only offer shaved ice. They have a counter seating of around 10 or so seats. We grabbed a couple of counter seats where we can see then making the shaved ice.
You can get some hot green tea from the self-service station. The tea cups were so very cute! Eating a large cold shaved ice might need a little bit of warmth after a while.
The owner and the staffs here are really friendly and nice. We had a fun conversation during our stay. They are efficient and went right into making the shaved ice as soon as we sat down.
They had eight different kinds on this day, and they all looked really good. It was not easy to choose, but I went with the Mont Blanc with Chestnut and Rum (ラム モンブラン) (2,300 yen/~$16 January 2024). It comes with a side of rum raisins. You can ask them to omit the rum if you want this to be alcohol free. You might say it is pricy for a shaved ice, but it is huge, great quality, and look how pretty and artistic it is! Mont Blanc is one of the most popular and classic Japanese sweets (in my opinion), creamy pastry that you can find at most dessert shops and cafes. I always liked Mont Blanc, so I wanted to try this shaved ice version.
The ice was fluffy and airy, packed just enough to hold all the creamy drizzle toppings without being too hardened. It had some more chestnut cream in the middle as well, so you get the flavor and creaminess throughout. The drizzle had amazing flavor of the chestnut, sweet and nutty. After a while, you do get slightly bored with the flavor, but then, that is when you can top it with rum raisins. Then all of a sudden, it becomes a whole different shaved ice! The flavor of sweet chestnut with rum raisins goes really nice together. And the amount of the rum raisins you receive is just right. I really enjoyed it.
Mu hubby went with a more of New Years special design, that looks like Kagami-Mochi that you see during the New Years. It was Kumquat Iriki and Lemon Verbena scented Sweet Sake (金柑いりきとレモンバーベナ香る甘酒) (2,000 yen/~$14 January 2024) It had white creamy drizzle, with special Iriki kumquat and a few colorful gummies on top to make it extra festive. The white fan looking thing on the top was super crunchy and crispy, adding extra texture to it.
This one also had some filling in the middle. The creamy coating had nice citrus and lemony flavor, with a hint of sweet sake flavor. It was almost like condensed milk with lemon and sweet sake flavor infused in it, but without being overly sweet. The ice, once again, was fluffy and light, yet packed enough to hold the weight and keep its shape. I heard that they change the way they shave the ice according to what kind of topping the ice is going to get. With different weights of the topping, they choose the correct texture and thickness of the ice. How awesome!
As the kooriya Peace is located inside a building shared by other eateries, the bathroom is shared among the businesses. You need to go back out to the hallway, find a staircase, and go to the second floor. Right at the top of the staircase, you will find white doors with male/female sign on the doors.
Inside the bathroom was quite modern. It had a baby changing station at one corner, sinks in the middle, and three stalls. Vivid red color against bright white color made it interesting design. The bathroom was well-lit, well stocked, and very clean.
We had such fun dessert time here at Kooriya Peace. The owner and the staffs were so welcoming and friendly. Their shaved ice creations are nothing like I’ve ever had. They were so pretty and so creative. As they constantly change their shaved ice offerings, you can try different flavors every time! And, they offer shaved ice all year around, so you can get your shaved ice craving fixed any time of the year!
