Matt’s BBQ Tacos

I took a bit of a break from writing the blog posts while working on other projects… Now I am back and trying to catch up with the last few places we went in Portland Oregon last summer. Better late than never, right? We were interested in their food truck culture, or food cart pods, such as Tokyo Sando. We went to another food cart pod, this time for some BBQ. This spot called the Hinterland Cart Pot had a nice big seating area, all open and pretty clean.

We found one of the popular food truck called Matt’s BBQ, and they have a few locations serving different variations of their BBQ. We were most interested in their BBQ tacos, so we went to the Hinterland Cart Pot where the Matt’s BBQ Tacos is located. The food cart was toward the back of the food cart pot, very Texan looking, as they serve Texas-style BBQ. You order from the touch screen by the serving window, or you can order from their website. The wait time is shown above it, and as it is a popular spot, the wait time can go up significantly in a matter of minutes. You get a text when your order is ready, which is convenient.

We got three different kinds of tacos to start. Chopped Beef Taco Supreme ($6.25), Chopped Brisket Breakfast taco ($7.25), and Brisket Taco ($6.50). We were also given three different kinds of spicy sauces, which we used just slightly so that they won’t overpower the flavor of the perfectly smoked meats.

Chopped Brisket Taco comes with smoked brisket tossed in Hot Dip, and topped with picked onions on a fresh flour tortilla. Beef Taco Supreme with smoked ground beef, queso, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, and crema. Chopped Brisket Breakfast taco comes with smoked brisket, potato, cheddar, and eggs on a fresh flour tortilla. The tacos were all very tasty, with ender, juicy meat. It was packed with flavor, with a nice note of smokey flavor.

The tacos are not big, but just normal size. After sharing the three tacos between the two of us, we decided to get two more tacos since my hubby was still a bit hungry for more. We went with more breakfast tacos, Sausage Patty and Hashbrown taco ($8.25), and Pulled Pork Breakfast ($7.25).

Sausage Patty and Hashbrown taco is made with House made pork sausage patty, hashbrown, eggs, American and cheddar cheese, topped with aioli on a flour tortilla. Pulled Pork Breakfast is with refried beans, cheddar, and eggs on a fresh flour tortilla. We enjoyed all the breakfast ones. I especially loved the hashbrown one, it was so good! The pulled pork was good too, but I am not a fan of creamy refried beans, although this one was tasty.

What I really appreciated about this food pod is that they had a really nice, big bathrooms between the two outdoor seating areas. They were clean and well maintained.

We had another fun dining experience at another one of their Portland’s food cart pods. Everything we had from Matt’s BBQ Tacos were pretty good, although our second order of two tacos took forever as the wait time was nearly one hour. That tells you they are super popular!
