Mike & Patty’s

One of the breakfast place that I really wanted to visit while I was in Boston was Mike & Patty’s. They had photos of super tasty looking sandwiches, and yes, with rave reviews. I finally had the time to visit them right before I had to go back home to NYC. It was at a corner, with their entrance facing the corner. The green door against the red brick wall was very cute and noticeable.

The inside is very small. And I mean, VERY small. Most of the space was taken up by their kitchen, with staffs working super fast and efficiently. They are pretty popular, so they stayed busy the whole time. All the staffs were nice and welcoming, and didn’t rush me to order (I didn’t know what I was going to order when I walked in).

The cashier is at front, and their drinks are in the refrigerator (unless you want something hot). Without really knowing that all the cold drinks were in here, and not knowing what kinds of drinks are in there, I ordered iced coffee. I was told to simply take one out the refrigerator. Once I reached for it, I saw some juices in there, which I might have wanted more than pre-made iced coffee…but oh well.

After you put in an order for food, you can either wait in the very small waiting area by the door, or wait right outside (they will call your name when your food is ready). There is a counter table with 4 bar stools, but the space is really cramped there. Not many people actually choose to dine there, since people are constantly bumping into you. Another issue is that the door opens inward, so you have to push into the people who are waiting for their food. The space gets pretty much full when there are more than 3 people in the inside. It would be easier if the door opens outward to the street… They had condiments, plastic-ware and other few things staged right by the entrance, which also was not easy to get to when it is crowded.

Once my food was ready, I walked about 5 minutes or so to a nearby park with a bench. I didn’t want to eat inside the super crowded, small shop. They put my sandwich in a cute little brown bag with their stamp. The sandwich was wrapped in aluminum foil type paper to keep it nice and warm.

All of their sandwiches sounded really good, so it was not an easy task for me to choose just one… I ended up with one of their most popular item, Fancy ($9). It is made with two fried eggs, bacon, cheddar cheese, avocado, red onions and house-mayo on toasted Iggy’s multigrain bread.

Now, it might not look like much, but with just one bite, I was in sandwich heaven! Bread was nice and airy, perfectly toasted so that they are not too soft nor too hard. Eggs are plump without being over cooked. Still had a slight creaminess to it instead of them being completely dry. And the bacon…my goodness they were great! A bit thicker than regular bacon, with smokey flavor that just pops. Avocado is velvety without being too mushy, playing a perfect side kick to bring out the comforting flavor of the sandwich.  I don’t know how they make their sandwich so freakin’ tasty, but they are popular for a reason! It was super delicious, I was so happy I got to go try one of their sandwiches!

Cold Brew Iced Coffee ($3.75) on the other hand was not so great. Pre-made and sitting in a fridge under the cashier counter for a while, it loses its fresh taste. And, it had ice cubes in it that was melting and watering-down the coffee. Again, maybe I should have gotten one of their juice offerings instead…

Overall, I had high expectations for their popular sandwiches, and they did totally deliver! It was tasty, filling, high quality and made with love. It was one of the best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had. If I ever go back to Boston area, I would love to go back for another sandwiches, regardless of the wait or the small cramped space. It is totally worth it!
