While visiting Seattle, we decided to go have a fun day trip to Bainbridge Island. We do enjoy a nice ferry ride anywhere! Even though the distance from the Seattle port to Bainbridge is not that far, it took more than 30 minutes. The ferry moved pretty slow…well, it was nice and steady because of the speed. We had several spots we wanted to go on the island, and one of them was this fish & chips spot. The restaurant is still new, created by the founder of a popular food truck in Seattle called Nosh. The popularity certainly extended across the water, as they had a long line when we arrived!
The fish & chips served at the Nosh has been named the best in the city by the Seattle Times in the past, and everyone wants to get a bite of that glory! Here at the restaurant, they do offer much more than the legendary fish and chips, and you can get them with beer or wine too! Just don’t get the octopus angry while you are reading the menu on the wall…
You order and pay at the register at the front of the line, and then look for a seat. The turnaround is rather quick, so the wait for a table should not be too long. We were lucky enough to grab a small table immediately. The inside is long and narrow, a bit difficult to move around with staffs bringing out food and drinks.
They had a mural of iconic London scene on the wall, all the way back. The co-owner of this place is a native of London. They had all the condiments and complimentary water right around there, next to open kitchen. But, this is also where their staffs come out of with trays full of hot food, so please watch out!
We ordered their British Fish & Chips ($16), served in newspaper. We had to get what the fuss was all about… It is made with wild, sustainable, longline, organic Bering Sea Cod. Served with house minted mushy peas and tartar sauce, freshly hand cut chips, cooked twice for the perfect bite.
They use the original recipe from the Nosh food truck. Alaskan line-caught cod from the Bering Sea, dipped in local beer batter. Sounds awesome, right? The fish was pretty nice size, we actually ordered one to share, and we each did get a nice portion. The fish came out piping hot, with flakey, juicy white fish, shiny like pearls. Tender and packed with flavor. So good!
The fat fries was really good too, cooked twice, like the true Belgian fries… Addictive and always a perfect companion to the beer battered fish! The mushy peas was…well, interesting. I’ve never had “minted” mushy peas, I say the flavor is something that needs a little getting used to. My hubby thought it was great though. And I loved the newspaper too. I wonder if they are made just for this spot?
They do have a bathroom here, tucked away. Go over to the condiments and water counter, and find a small bathroom sign with an arrow and a fish. Follow the yellow fish…not to find a Matrix but a bathroom. They had a nice size bathroom, clean and well kept.
So, what did we think of “Seattle’s BEST Fish & Chips by Seattle Times & ZAGAT”? Well, we haven’t tried all the fish & chips in Seattle to confirm that claim, but I say it was darn good! Definitely one of the best fish & chips I’ve ever had. Super delicious! If you are a fan of fish & chips, you might want to take a trip to Bainbridge Island for an awesome fish & chips!
