When you are visiting Springfield at Universal Studio, you must listen to Homer Simpson, who says “You don’t win friends with salad.” Unless your friend is a vegetarian or vegan, I kind of agree with him. Inside the Springfield, they have rides, games, funny statues, stores, and yes, eateries.
They have a quick-service or “fast food” items available at Simpsons Fast Food Blvd. It is actually a fun spot to visit. You can see a large map murals of Springfield and Krusty Land, very detailed and fun to look at. The seating area is pretty large, good space for a huge theme park.
Here at Fast Food Blvd, they have: Lisa’s Teahouse of Horror offering pre-made salad and sandwiches, Luigi’s offering pizzas, The Frying Dutchman offering fried seafood, Cletus’ Chicken Shack offering fried chicken items, Krusty Burger offering, well, burger, and Flaming Moe’s offering non-alcoholic beverages.
No matter which one you chose, everyone has to get in a same line. Although, with congested mess, I saw some people just go directly to the order counter of their choice, un-noticed by the staffs. Not everyone realizes there is a loooong line… It is a big space. The food choices were “interesting” enough, the least popular seemed to be Lisa’s Teahouse of Horror. I didn’t see anyone going there to pick up their pre-made items while we were in line. Other than Burt, messing up her wall of course with spray can.
For us, we decided to get a burger from Krusty Burger, and a chicken sandwich from Cletus’ Chicken Shack. We got in the line, and although it was a long line, it moved at an ok speed. Not very fast, but not super slow either. At the front of the line, you get to go to whichever the spot you want food from. I went over to the Krusty’s Burger while my Hubby went to Cletus’ Chicken Shack. You first go to the right side of the counter to place your order, and pick up your food at the left. Lots of young, high-school looking kids working behind the counter, chit-chatting with each other. Do not expect any kind of customer service…
I got the traditional Krusty Burger ($10.49), and it seemed like they were somewhat made to order. You get to watch the young staffs behind the counter, making your burger. Well, more like slapping one ingredients after another on a bun without a care… But hey, they do work for Krusty the Clown, right? You can’t really expect them to be perfect. LOL.
We decided NOT to sit at the large seating area right by these fast food shops. Instead, we walked right next door (connected to this area) over to Moe’s. At the main entrance from the outside, Barney welcomes you with a huge mug that is almost empty. He seems a bit sad looking at the bottom of the mug… They have many funny drawings on the wall, keeping us all entertained.
They have a bar, and yes, you can get Duff Beer! It seemed like they have a very small food menu here at well, serving salad, wrap, fruit cup, etc. If you want a real food, you need to walk over to the Fast Food Blvd through the connected wall opening.
After we got our food, we walked into the Moe’s, and quickly found an empty seat. Maybe not everyone realizes that there are more seating in Moe’s, which was good for us. They have table seating and booth seating, and I gotta say, it gave us more authentic Simpsons feel in this space than eating in that large food court area.
So, the Krusty Burger comes with 1/3 lb burger with secret sauce, cheddar cheese sauce, a giant tomato slice, iceberg lettuce, served on specialty bun. It also comes with “Kurly” fries and pickle spear. First of all, I am not sure what is their definition of “gigantic” tomato, since I saw a regular (medium to small) size tomato slice… Anyways, I felt like the true Krusty Burger is supposed to be kind of, well, crappy. We certainly did not come here to get a gourmet burger. So, with our real expectation in mind, they were right on the money. Thin patty, some gooey cheese sauce, pieces of lettuce and tomato, and just a regular, no-frill bun. Just the way we expected Krusty’s burger to be. I always liked curly fries, so that was a nice addition, even though it was a small portion. I believe they are store-bought or something, nothing special here either.
Cletus’ Chicken Shack had the same system, you order from the right side, and pick up at the left side of the counter. From here, we ordered Chicken & Waffle Sandwich ($11.19).
Chicken & Waffle Sandwich comes with double Battered, extra crispy fried chicken breast between two waffles with maple syrup mayo & tater tots. Now, let me tell you, the photo on the menu looked really, really good. I mean, really. When we received the actual item, looking much different from the photo, we were a bit disappointed, but then again, we are here at Fast Food Blvd, should not come here with a high expectation on food quality, both in presentation and flavor.
The ingredients – waffle, veggie, and chicken – are not high quality. The thing that made it better was the maple syrup mayo. You get the sweetness for the waffle and mayo for the veggie, and the chicken bridging the two together. It was not horrible, but rather interesting. Tater tots were probably store-bought, but hey, we like tater tots regardless, so that was ok.
For drinks, we wanted to try the famous Flaming Moe’s. It was right by Krusty Burger, and it had a neon sign that said “Happiness is just a Flaming Moe away” which was pretty funny. They offer some fruity drinks and yes, Duff beer, but I wanted their Signature Specialty drink of Springfield, Flaming Moe ($8.99).
They had a couple of special handle with Flaming Moe on it, and on the wall, they had a picture of Moe and Homer, toasting with Flaming Moe in their hands. It was quite interesting and fun to watch the Flaming Moe being made. When you order Flaming Moe, a staff goes to the back and bring back a “special cup.” Then, pours a magical liquid into it, and as soon as it hit the cup, it starts to smoke.
Now, Flaming Moe is a non-alcoholic beverage, in matter of fact, it is basically an orange soda. Well, it is an orange soda that bubbles up and smokes up like it is on fire! But, it is not hot at all, it is nice and cold. So, how is this special “flaming” effect happen?
It is created by using dry ice! The “special cup” has a bottom compartment, separated by a wall with small holes. The bottom compartment holds the dry ice. When the drink is poured into the cup, it bubbles up like it is boiling, and produces smoke. Genius…! The result is really fun and cool, and the smoke and bubbles lasts for maybe 5 minutes or so. Long enough to enjoy it. The cup is rather small, so you finish the drink quite fast too.
We were very happy we got to visit the Fast Food Blvd in Springfield. We also wanted to get the huge pink donut that Chief Wiggum, but that was seriously huge, we didn’t think we could finish it after the lunch… The Springfield itself was fun, not so much the rides, but walking around it was really cool. They had larger-than-life characters all over, addition to Barney’s in Moe’s Tavern, they also have Duff man, Chief Wiggum, and few other characters here and there. And eating at Fast Food Blvd can bring up the awesome atmosphere to the next level. Just do not expect a gourmet food…but go there for fun experience!
