Soup Dumpling Plus

We enjoy some soup dumplings every now and then. My friend told me about this spot a while ago. While we were in the area one weekend, we decided to try their soup dumplings. It is located inside a shopping center, doesn’t really have a huge sign outside, and mainly Korean stores in the shopping center.

They had a sign right off the entrance, so it was very easy to find. They had quite a lot of chairs lined up in the hallway for waiting. I wonder if they get that busy during rush hour? They also had their menu and today’s special on the walls, that you have something to read while you read, if there is a wait.

We went there before the lunch rush started, shortly after they opened. There was no line, and most of the tables were unoccupied. But more and more people kept coming in, so I assume they are quite popular in this neighborhood. They had interesting decor, with the walls covered with a photo of old street photos.

With the walls being rather monochromatic, the fun side of their personally really shined. For instance, the large Mario figuring from Super Mario Brothers were sitting atop one of the walls. They had a back room which was smaller, but the walls in here were much more colorful and cute.

Good thing about having a cute wall is that they can be a good background when you are taking a photo of your food. They were still setting up this area when we arrived, but I am sure this place get pretty packed during rush hour.

And the toys…or I should say figuring…and lots of it! I wonder if the owner is a collector of some sort? It was fun to quickly brows through all the characters from long ago.

Once we sat down, they brought us a complimentary cup of hot oolong tea. They also brought a small plate with something… after tasting one strand, we found out they are strands of ginger.

For the main item we came here for, soup dumplings, we chose Steamed Crab Meat & Pork Soup Dumplings ($6.95/6 pieces). It was very juicy and flavorful, nice size and steamed perfectly.

It was packed with flavor with thin wrapper which I really like. It was a nice amount, not too small and not too big. They came in right off the steamer so they were super hot! Do not attempt having this in one bite. You need to make a small hole first, drink the soup (carefully), and then eat the dumpling.

In addition to the dumplings, we ordered two more items. Since we didn’t know the portion of the dishes, we stopped there. We figured we can always add more order if we are still hungry. Good decision…the portion size here are quite large! We ordered Yeung Fried Rice ($8.95). It had certain oily-ness without being too oily. It had ham, shrimp, egg, pork, and few other ingredients. It was very tasty, since we don’t often eat much oily food, I think it was ok for us to get an oily dish. The rice was not over cooked, and not mushy. It had nice seasoning, not salty. The salt flavor came from the meat in the dish, didn’t feel like they added much extra salt, which was nice.

The last item we ordered was a noodle dish. trying to get variety of dishes here. We ordered Shredded Pork Pan Fried Udon Noodle ($7.95). The noodle was not over cooked but al dente. I enjoyed the crunchy bok choy in the dish. The flavoring was kind of sweet. Again, huge portion! It also had some mushrooms in it, which was plump and nice.

It might not been a healthy lunch, but a total comfort food can be healthy for your soul sometimes… The price point for the portion was great, and we were completely stuffed. It was good to find a place with good soup dumplings and comfort Chinese dishes. The service was efficient, but not very friendly. When we get a cravings for these type of food, we would certainly return!
