Since the pandemic, we haven’t really had the opportunity to take an advantage off of the Restaurant Week promotions. This winter, we finally got to try the Restaurant Week menu at Steak Frites Bistro. They offer bistro cuisine such as oysters, escargot, onion soup, and of course, steak frites.
As soon as you step inside, you are transported to an intimate French-type bistro. The interior reminded me of Petite Boucherie and Boucherie Park. They all have that similar feel and atmosphere, cozy and homey with décor from the golden era.
Once we are settled at our table, the server brought us a large bottle of water with glasses, and a basket of bread, containing French baguette and sesame sourdough. Appreciate a restaurant that provides a large bottle of water at your table, so you don’t have to keep asking for refills.
We went there during the weekend brunch, and they had a two-course brunch menu for the Restaurant Week. You can either do a starter and an entrée, or an entrée and a dessert for $30. We chose the starter and the entrée option, and went with Onion Soup Gratinée for our starter.
Soup was very nice, came piping hot with melty cheese that heightens your appetite. It was slightly on the salty side to me, but not too much. Loads of onions that was cooked until translucent, and soaked up all the broth, almost melt in your mouth. Nice size bread piece in there as well, also soaking up all the goodness. Perfect on a chilly day.
For the main entrée, I chose the classic Steak Frites 9oz (additional $10). When you are in Steak Frites Bistro, you have to try the Steak Frites, don’t you agree? It comes with hanger steak, pommes frites, and maître d’hôtel butter.
I ordered the steak medium rare, and it was cooked maybe a bit more rare than medium rare, but I loved it. Juicy and packed with flavor. Some charred spots that was even more delicious with that smoky flavor. Then their maître d’hôtel butter brought the steak to the next level. So good! And as you can see, it came with mountain of fries, crispy and addictive. So satisfying!
My hubby went with one of his favorite dishes, Moules Mariniéres. It came with a side of pommes frites, a pretty good portion of it too.
The dish looked smaller in portion than expected, but each shell contained a huge mussel inside, so it was nice and filling. The broth was great too, nice flavor from garlic and white wine. Used the bread to soak up the broth at the end. Fresh mussels that was not fishy at all. Plump and meaty!
We decided to add a little dessert and cappuccino to our order. They had two desserts to chose from, and we went with Petit Pot de Crème ($10). It came with a nice amount of whipped cream and some chocolate pearls. The chocolate pudding was dense yet velvety. It was indeed creamy, and very chocolatey, great for a chocolate lover. I enjoyed the little chocolate pearls on top with the crunchy texture.
Since we put in the order for Cappuccino ($5.50) after we received the dessert, it took a few extra minutes. It was really good cup of coffee, strong and fragrant.
Bathroom is around the corner of the bar, down the staircase. They had two gender neutral bathrooms. They are located right next to their kitchen, so be mindful of where you stand if you are waiting for the bathroom to be available.
The bathroom was a nice size, cool decoration that made me curious of what/why question. One of the walls had “interesting” wallpaper too, which I intentionally did not take a picture of…
We had a nice brunch here. We were happy to finally take advantage of the Winter Restaurant Week menu. I was a bit surprised that it was just two-course menu, since most places I’ve dined during the restaurant week offer at least three-course menu. But we turned it into three-course meal with added cost anyways… The food was delicious, and we enjoyed every bite. Service was not particularly friendly, but efficient and courteous.
