The Chipped Cup

I know I still have a lot of catch up to do from my Japan trip…but, let me get back to NYC for a bit. If you had chance to read many of my blogs, then you know I love speakeasy spots, and hidden/neighborhood gems. Well, let me introduce you to this hidden gem cafe spot. It is called The Chipped Cup, and it has that secret speakeasy vibe, which I love. The entrance is found under the staircase, not so noticeable from the street.

The inside is much bigger than expected. It had that old, antique look with warm lights and exposed brick walls. The decor and furniture also add to that old-timey feel. They had some baked goods in the showcase, they all looked great. They offer other dishes such as sandwiches, burrito, toasts, etc., etc… On this day, we were informed by the staff that their toaster is acting up, so they might not be able to toast or heat up anything.

What makes The Chipped Cup extra special is their back patio. I mean, just look at this space! It is so peaceful and beautiful! You will not think you are in Manhattan when you are here. For extra peaceful vibe, go there early before everyone else arrives. We decided to sit outside in this tranquil space and have our brunch under the sun and the greenery.

We ordered Latte ($5.75) with their seasonal syrup, which was Coconut Syrup (additional $1). For food, we ordered thing that does not need to be toasted. We went with Liège Waffle ($5.50), Lemon Loaf ($4.50), and Bagel & Lox ($15).

I love Liège Waffle, and they make a great one here at The Chipped Cup! It was soft and doughy, rich and had the perfect chewy texture. Soooo good! It contained some sugar pearls that provided crunchy texture against the soft and fluffy texture. Loved every bite! Lemon Loaf here is gluten free. It was moist and delightful! Nice aroma of lemon, fluffy and dense at the same time. The acidic flavor of the lemon balanced the sweetness of the waffle. Really enjoyed this too. The Coconut Latte was delicious. Sweet but not overly sweet, with the subtle aroma and flavor coconut. Rich and creamy foam atop nice, strong coffee that complimented the baked goods.

Bagel & Lox comes with a choice of bagel, and choice of cream cheese. We went with Everything Bagel and Scallion Cream Cheese. For vegan patrons, they have vegan cream cheese options too. The Bagel & Lox also has tomatoes, capers, onions, smoked lox, and everything seasoning. It came with ample amount of lox, super fresh and delicious. Bagels was not the easiest to cut and eat (in my opinion) even with the knife and fork, but it was very tasty. Loved the addition of the tomatoes in here. They also offer gluten free bread available for gluten sensitive patrons. The Chipped Cup seem to have everything and everyone pretty much covered.

They have one gender neutral bathroom near the back patio door. It was a nice size, clean and organized. I like how they call it the “Powder Room” which gives that old-fashion, old-timey feel.

The staffs here were friendly and polite. The back patio space was so peaceful and relaxing. We had a such nice brunch out there. About the time we were done, more people arrived at the patio, and even more people in the inside space. We were happy to have our quiet, tranquil time before the morning rush. If you are looking for a hidden gem cafe, head over to The Chipped Cup!
