We visited The Crooked Knife on 14th Street for brunch in the autumn. We didn’t have a reservation, but luckily, we got their last table! It was quite lively with everyone relaxing over food with family and friends.
I like the seating area by the entrance with large sofas, making it feel like a living room of someone’s home. With lots of wood everywhere, and warm earthy tones, it was very homey. They had a bar in the middle, which made the inside look a bit small.
But, behind the bar was another large dining room, almost hidden. It was a few steps up, and with two big skylights, it was flooded with natural light. The Crooked Knife had all sorts of cute and interesting knickknacks everywhere, it was fun to look around.
We started off with coffee ($3) as usual, with some milk on the side. The milk came in a small adorable pitcher, I always love these little things! It was a good cup of coffee.
For food, we ordered Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich ($18) and The Truffle Shuffle ($18). As you can see, they were pretty nice portions, which we were happy about.
Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich is made with Fried Chicken, Guacamole, Bacon, and Ranch, served with French Fries. We put the sandwich together, and it was a big sandwich! The chicken was flattened, which was different from the other chicken sandwich we had in the past, such as the ones from Birdies Hot Chicken, Heros & Villains, and Harlem Public at North End.
The bacon was nice and juicy, not overdone which was nice. The chicken was packed with flavor, I liked the crunchy batter. It came with lettuce, tomato, and onions, and they were very fresh and crisp. The buns were soft and airy, but strong enough to hold all the weight. It was very satisfying sandwich!
The Truffle Shuffle is made with 8oz Beef Burger with Truffle Aioli, Gruyere Cheese, Hashbrown, Lettuce, Tomato, and Onion and served with French Fries. For someone who loves truffle anything and hash brown, this was impossible to resist. And the way it came out looked amazing! It reminded me of the breakfast sandwich from Hole In The Wall, but bigger.
When I put them all together, it was like a burger tower of joy. It tasted like a pure joy too. Burger patty was cooked just right, juicy and packed with flavor. The veggies were fresh, and the hash brown was great too. It certainly had the aroma and flavor of the truffle, which raised this burger to another level. Yum!
Now, you know I try to give you the bathroom situation at most of the places I go to, so here we go! The bathroom for Men was easy to find, it was towards the back, before the large back dining room. It looked like a second bar set up, separated from the front bar. But, if you are looking for the bathroom for women, you will not find one there. It is located right by the entrance door, next to the ATM machine.
The women’s bathroom had two stalls, and then two sinks outside of the individual bathroom stalls. The wallpaper and floor tiles had that antique-kind of feel to it, I thought it was lovely.
We had an excellent brunch here at The Crooked Knife. The server was friendly and courteous, food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxing and warm. We would definitely go back for some more tasty dishes!
