Voodoo Doughnut

One of the spots that kept coming up during our research for the Portland, OR trip was Voodoo Doughnut. Seems like a very popular doughnut spot for locals and tourists alike. We love a good doughnut, and we thought the name was interesting too.

It was easy to find, with bright pink exterior and a queue outside the building, waiting to go inside. There was a staff right at the door, controlling the number of people in the inside the shop, and when and how many people can go inside.

Once we were allowed inside, it was a really fun with all the bright colors. They had a huge sprinkled doughnut on the ceiling, and some memorabilia on the walls. They had some merchandise as well, for anyone who wanted more than just their doughnuts.

Everything they had in there was fun, including the doughnut display. They had a cylinder case with all the doughnuts on the turning tiered tables. You can check out all the doughnuts they have available by looking at them.

There were so many interesting sounding ones there. We decided to try Mango Tango ($3.75), Grape Ape ($3.25), Viscous Hibiscus ($3.75), and the most famous, Voodoo Doll ($4.50). Mango Tango is a raised shell filled with mango jelly and topped with vanilla frosting and tang. It was very sweet. And I mean, very, VERY sweet. Didn’t really taste mango, but just sugar. Grape Ape is a Raised ring with vanilla frosting, grape dust, and purple sprinkles. This one was also very sweet. Tasted like a sweet grape juice. Viscous Hibiscus is a raised ring with hibiscus frosting and black sprinkles. very similar to the Grape Ape, again, very sweet… Voodoo Doll is a raised yeast doughnut filled with raspberry jelly topped with chocolate frosting and a pretzel stake. Characteristics of Voodoo Dolls are all different, so you never know what your doll will look like, which is fun. It was bigger and heavier than others. It had a pretzel sticking out from the middle, making it look even more like a voodoo doll. The taste? I think you can guess…sweet! LOL. It felt heavy and overly sweet, same as others. So, unfortunately for us, we couldn’t finish them between the three of us. It was a sugar overload.

So, although we enjoyed visiting this iconic spot, we didn’t enjoy their doughnut as we much as we had hoped. But, I am still glad that we got to visit the Voodoo Doughnut and tried their famous Voodoo Doll Doughnut.
